Overview
Holy Wig is a photo essay focusing on the business of wig making in Jewish communities and its relation whit both Jewish religion and tradition.

Traditional Jewish communities a women must cut her hairs cover and cover her head after marriage. Similarly to a burka or a head scarf these “traditions” are not clearly defined in any “book of god”, yet rigorously implemented. Depending on how traditional the community a woman lives in her wig/hair stile can range in a combination of a shaved head or short hairs covered with a head scarf, an ugly wig (purposely designed to diminishing woman sensuality) or a beautiful highly pricey wig. These wig start form 5000 $ minimum and stand at the core a business defining female identity both physical and socially.

This religious innuendo crated a market spreading as far as Ukraine and India. The search for the perfect hairs however has settled the this battle ground in Ukraine were percuss caucasian hair can be found in a wide range of color and stiles. Wig manufacture Freeda Wigs employs hundreds in Dnepropetrovsk alone with a retrofitting industry growing allover the city.
