Maether
Overview
Maether is a blown-up fluid dynamic model: water molecules, represented by a multitude of balloons suspended at different heights throughout the room, immerse the public. The balloons are in constant flux, driven by computer-controlled fans throughout the space. As people move through the room (within the exhibit space), our custom-built computer vision system senses their movements and determines the movement of the balloons. In other words, our interface transforms the movements of people in the room into an array of signals that directs the fans to move the “molecules.” For instance, a waving arm causes a “twister” of balloons produced by a programmed sequence of fan activations. In addition, the system recognizes and signifies collisions between visitors and balloons, and between the balloons themselves. “Maether” evokes childhood mysteries, when questions like “How does this work?” and “What is it made of?” are matters of utmost importance and sheer joy.
