As part of the IMPERO series Territories also uses traditional female handicrafts transforming ephemeral object in contemporary conceptual art works With Territories I works around the idea of colonization. As an empire acquires territories (Satellite or colonies) to establish its power, at a micro level people obsessed with power acquire goods to establish their social status. With Territories I objectify colonies transform it into tangible, tactile, and proprietary household furnishings: pillows, couches, curtains and luxurious household decorations. The design is inspired by the texture of a topographic map. Scars and wounds, consequences of a violent imperialistic action, are reinvented into a decorative pattern made of detailed embroidering and linear designs created with fabric and seams. “Territories” as decorative elements create a sophisticated lounging area were each element of the composition represents an acquired territory, shaped and used to fulfill the need of it’s owner.
